IB French B SL Individual Oral: Structure, Criteria and 25 Practice Questions

The Individual Oral (IO) is worth 25% of your IB French B grade. At SL you speak about a visual stimulus linked to one of the five themes, then have a wider conversation with your teacher. It lasts 12–15 minutes, after 15 minutes of supervised preparation.
This guide follows the current Language B course. A new subject guide is planned for first assessment in 2029. If you sit your exams before then, the format below applies to you, but check with your teacher.
The three parts of the oral

How to use your 15 minutes of preparation
- Minute 1–3: describe what you see (Au premier plan… à l'arrière-plan…).
- Minute 4–8: link the image to the theme and to a francophone country or culture you've studied.
- Minute 9–13: add a personal opinion and a comparison with your own culture.
- Minute 14–15: write 3 key words per part. You may not read from a script.
